Ben Liebert

The Data Guy

I provide expertise around data analysis and software development. I built, and now help to run SyncHub, which is a data-extraction tool aimed at business analysts/owners. SyncHub checks your SaaS services (HubSpot, Pipedrive, Xero etc) for modified data, then pulls it into a relational database so that you can easily query it from within your favourite reporting tools, like Power BI, Tableau, Excel etc. I also work as a software architect and consultant under the umbrella of my company, Blackball Software, which I founded in 2004. We typically work with small-medium sized start-up companies using the Microsoft stack (including Azure). Our clients are based around the world and cross a wide variety of technologies including big-data, multi-lingual systems & e-commerce. Basically, if you have a software idea, we can build it for you. Best of all - each day I return home to my beautiful wife and children, and a fat ungrateful cat called Dread Pirate Roberts.

Flavio Hangarter

Growth & Innovation Consultant

Over the past twelve years, I have launched two tech companies and supported over one hundred technology ventures with customer discovery, go-to-market strategy, capital raising and growth. In 2011, after my first tech company failed, I became obsessed with learning how to build scalable tech companies. This led me to study innovation, technology and growth from the most successful technology companies, visiting the innovation ecosystems of Europe and the US, where I have visited Palantir, Google, Techstars Accelerators, Citrix Accelerator and Plug'n'Play Innovation Centre. Since then, I have applied these learnings to advise teams to speed up product launches, raise better capital and accelerate growth. In 2020, I've combined my learnings and research to consult companies, facilitate strategy sessions and coach senior leaders in international best practices. This has led me to support one of my recent clients in scaling revenues to $40M+ annual recurring revenue.

Garry Williams

Project Manager

With a background of private and public sector leadership and governance experience, I am a highly organised and articulate person with strengths in relationship management and communication. My peers describe me as reliable, trustworthy and resourceful. I address problems through collaborative relationships and a balance of creativity and common sense. My first career in turf management spanned 22 years culminating at Abu Dhabi International Golf Club, in the United Arab Emirates, where I managed a team of up to 37 staff of varied ethnicity. Whilst maintaining a practical, hands-on approach to my work, I developed skills in planning, staff management, resource management, problem solving and project management. Since joining the public sector in 1997, I have taken on many ambiguous challenges and gained a wide range of experience dealing with senior ministers, chief executives, local government, governance groups, iwi advisors and community stakeholders. I balance work time developing our 4 ha block in Okuku, North Canterbury with my wife, looking after our dogs, cats and goats and getting in plenty of adventure motorcycling.

Hayley Sparks

Academic Director

I originally had visions of following a traditional academic career, but disrupted that by joining The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab to fulfill my passion for teaching, learning and research in a future-focused learning environment. In my role as National Academic Manager I contribute to teaching and supervision, new programme development and academic quality across all programmes. I have a passion fo learning,r new ideas, new programmes, and new initiatives that all aim to make education in Aotearoa more leading edge, more powerful, and more focused on learners. Graduating from the University of Auckland with a doctorate in geography allowed me to hone my skills in critical thinking, qualitative and quantitative research analysis and writing – all of which can be applied in a broad range of contexts. I have experience teaching large and small groups, facilitating workshops, developing course content and creating e-learning projects. My research projects primarily sit at the intersection of geography and education and understanding relationships between people and place; the role of digital technology in education, and the value of practice based research.

Jesin James

Senior Lecturer

Jesin (she/her) is a senior lecturer in the Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering department at the University of Auckland. Jesin's main research areas are speech signal processing, under-resourced languages, machine learning and engineering education. During 2012-2014 she worked on developing a Text To Speech synthesis system in her native language, Malayalam (language spoken in south India), with special emphasis on developing a prosodic model for the same. Further, during 2014-2016 she worked as a Lecturer in Electronics and Communication Engineering in India, during which she was involved in some student projects that have been published and presented to wider audience. In 2016, she joined University of Auckland as Ph.D scholar in the computer systems engineering. For her PhD, she worked in the Healthcare Robot project (part of CARES, University of Auckland), with special focus to improve the naturalness of the synthetic speech and incorporate empathy into the robot voice, to further improve its acceptance. Jesin strongly believes that if you can combine your passion with your career, you will never feel that you are working. Engineering offers the possibility to combine your passion with technology and make a difference. Jesin enjoys languages, music and interacting with people - and being a lecturer in Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering working on speech technology for languages is definitely tying everything up nicely. She works on building speech and language technology for languages such as New Zealand English, New Zealand Māori, Cook Islands Māori and Malayalam. In terms of her education philosophy, she tries to advocate the Māori concept of ako (The concept of ako describes a teaching and learning relationship, where the educator is also learning from the student and where educators’ practices are informed by the latest research and are both deliberate and reflective) in her teaching. Jesin is originally from Kerala, India. Malayalam is her native language.

Leon Thomason

Managing Director

Highly motivated and deeply committed to ethical business practices, I have previously run large teams of skilled specialists focused on achieving impactful results. Upon graduating from university, I envisioned a new kind of marketing agency - one that balanced the creativity and scale of a large advertising agency with the agility and expertise needed for digital transformation. This vision led to the creation of Flight Digital, a firm bridging the gap between creativity and strategic digital growth. Out of passion, we launched Other Group - a high-level production company powered by a team of talented creatives who bring stories to life across New Zealand. Equipped with cameras, drones, lighting, and sound gear, this crew delivered top-tier content with an unmatched positive attitude. The Whitening Co, our venture into e-commerce and bricks and mortar business. This stands as a testament to effective, engaging marketing. This business empowers people to "smile with confidence," and its rapid growth speaks to the power of our approach and the public's enthusiastic response. In the previous 3 years, I have serviced the Real Estate industry, setting the standard for Real Estate Photo and Video Services. This saw a team of professionals working from a Full Scale Photography Studio service more than 350 returning clients around New Zealand and delivering more than 2500 photo and video sets - as well as running more than 1200 property marketing campaigns. In 2024, I expanded my focus to offer the growth services I’ve refined for my own ventures directly to clients in the building and property industries. BuildVision spans photo and video production, marketing, and web development, sales & partnerships, helping businesses in these sectors enhance their brand and reach. Experienced Director with a solid background in marketing and advertising, I bring expertise in Online Advertising, B2B Marketing, Digital Strategy, and Customer Service. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business with a focus on Marketing and Advertising and a minor in Sales from Auckland University of Technology.

My research area looks at the relationship between people and technology which means my research is bound to many academic fields including robotics, biomechanics, mechatronics, health and neuroscience to name a few. I have been lucky to to teach in multiple countries and have recently moved to the Waikato after managing the research and development arm of the Pūhoro STEMM kaupapa, the largest indigenous STEM academy in the world. Research- From 2014 through till now I have maintained an active research program. My area looks at the relationship between people and technology. In specific I developed assistive technology to restore the quality of life of amputees. My research has contributed to these academic fields through both scholarship and publication. I have participated in and presented at academic conferences with great outcomes. Teaching- I have had many opportunities to prepare and deliver research-informed lectures. I have also coordinated tutorials, classes, demonstrations and workshops. The most recent experience was in Shijiazhuang (China) where I was responsible for delivering first, second and third year engineering papers at the Hebei University of Science and Technology. I am a lecturer and an emerging researcher at Auckland University of Technology , with a special interest in Neuroinformatics, which is an interdisciplinary filed of advanced Artificial Intelligence, combining disciplines from computer science, neuroscience, and psychology. In 2010, I secured $2.2m research grant for an international AI project as the Principal Investigator. This project titled “Computational neuro-genetic modelling for diagnosis and prognosis in mental health”, is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) through the “2020 Catalyst Strategic - New Zealand Singapore Data Science Research Programme” for three years. I have been always passionate about disseminating the state-of-the-art knowledge in AI field and this has encouraged me to establish “Neuroinformatics Interest Group” as a founder that holds regular UK and NZ joined research seminars for raising awareness of AI applications in various fields including mental and neurological health. I completed my PhD at Auckland University of Technology in the field of AI to develop brain-inspired models for spatiotemporal brain data modelling which has a wide range of applications including mental/ brain health and well-being. Upon completion of my PhD in 2018, I started working as a Post-doctoral at AUT's KEDRI. My main research focus has been developing novel AI techniques, based on brain-inspired artificial intelligence (BI-AI) technologies, for precise detection and prediction of mental and neurological disorders; thereby, assisting humanity towards a better and healthier life. Hitherto, my work has been successfully applied to various neurological and psychological applications for detection and prediction of brain states (i.e. depression, Alzheimer, cognitive impairments, etc). My current projects are: - Personalized prognosis modelling system which creates a profile for each individual (patient) for the best possible output prediction/classification. -Predictive system for stroke occurrence, - Neuro-computational predictive models of MCI progression to dementia and Alzheimers. - Generic biologically-plausible methodology to investigate how patients respond to certain treatments. My contributions to research environment include associate editors in three reputable journals, conference chair, reviewing papers, oral presentations and tutorial involvement in international conferences. I am member in several research communities: IEEE, CIS, and American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

Mikael’s area of expertise is focused on the interface of the Building Technology and Public Health. He has been leading a few intervention studies where he investigated the relationship between domestic heaters, ventilation and the level of pollutants (mould, bacteria, chemicals and moisture) in homes and in classrooms. These studies had a strong sympathy for vulnerable communities with low income, Māori and Pasifika communities being particularly at risk through a higher burden of disease. Recently, he moved his interest from the home environment to the school environment (primary schools environment and children’s exposure to indoor contaminants) and he led the development of low cost IAQ monitoring platform (SKOMOBO: SKOol MOnitoring BOx).

Olaf Diegel

Professor

I head up the Creative Design and Additive Manufacturing Lab at the University of Auckland. The goal of the Lab is to do research into various areas of additive manufacturing (AM), with a particular focus on design for additive manufacturing (DfAM). I am an educator and a practitioner of additive manufacturing (AM) and product development with an excellent track record of developing innovative solutions to engineering problems. As professor of additive manufacturing I am involved in all aspects of AM and am one of the principal authors of the annual Wohlers Report, considered by many to be the bible of AM. My current main area of research expertise is in design for AM. In my consulting practice I develop a wide range of products for companies around the world. Over the past three decades I have developed over 150 commercialized new products and, for this work, have received numerous product development awards. My research interests are varied and include additive manufacturing (3D printing), rapid product development, intelligent and mechatronic systems, and any manufacturing technologies that can help speed up the product development process. Within the area of additive manufacturing, my research interests include new hybrid AM technologies, topology optimisation, light-weighting and other computer aided engineering topics relevant to AM, composite polymer materials for AM, better post-processing techniques for metal AM technologies, and I have a huge interest in design for AM (DfAM) as I believe that it is one of the keys to industry adopting AM by learning how to design to take advantage of what AM offers. Over the last 20 years, I have become a passionate follower of additive manufacturing. I believe it is one of the technologies that has been a real godsend to innovation as it allows designers and inventors to instantly test out ideas to see if they work. It also removes the traditional manufacturing constraints that have become a barrier to creativity, and allows us to get real products to market without the normally high costs that can become a barrier to innovation. In 2012, I started manufacturing a range of 3D printed guitars and basses that has developed into a successful little side-business (and gives me the therapy I needs in allowing me to make things that are a blend of high-technology and traditional hand-crafting). More information on my 3D printed guitars can be found at www.oddguitars.com. To date, I have manufactured about 116 guitars using both polymer and metal additive manufacturing.

I have made it my mission to make #AI the comfort zone of everyone I can reach. Why? Have you ever thought if #CyberSecurity was everyone's comfort zone how different our internet world would have been and how many negative events could have been prevented? #AI will deeply impact our future and change the way we live, think and make decisions. I want to make sure everyone has their eyes and minds open to how we are building this future. After researching the underlying cause of the #danger of #ArtificialIntelligence, I have realised this is a problem that needs to be and must be looked at from different angles. I have dedicated my life to finding out what these angles are. The #WHY behind the danger of #AI. The #WHAT behind what we are missing and the #HOW of how we are changing the world for better or worse.

Zohreh Doborjeh

Lecturer in Psychology

I have a strong passion for brain and behaviour, perceptual and cognitive processes and how these are influenced by biological underpinning mechanisms. My PhD Research was modelling spatiotemporal EEG and ERP brain data for dynamic pattern recognition and brain state prediction using a brain-inspired artificial intelligence technique. Currently, I am the Associate Investigator of the project (Catalyst Strategic - New Zealand Singapore Data Science Research Programme), funded by over $2.2m by New Zealand’s MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment). The aim of this project is the prediction of mental illnesses in youth population and to suggest proper interventions with respect to abundant behavioural, cognitive, neuroimaging, molecular and genetic datasets. So far, my research has been illustrated in several case studies such as: - Mental health and well-being, to predict response to treatment for patients before mindfulness intervention is applied. - Neuromarketing, developing a model of consumers’ behaviour for detection and prediction of preferences, decisions and choice behaviour. My work has contributed to me being awarded the Global Young Scientist; Outstanding Doctoral Award; Dean’s Award of Excellence; and three Best International Paper Awards.
