Byron Rangiwai
Associate Professor of Māori & Indigenous Research
Associate Professor Byron Rangiwai (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Whare) is a Māori and Indigenous research scholar at Ngā Wai a Te Tūī, Unitec Te Pūkenga. He holds two doctorates: a PhD in Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies from the University of Otago, and a PhD in Māori Development from Auckland University of Technology. His published work spans Māori development, iwi and hapū history, theology, and neurodiversity. Recent scholarship includes a peer-reviewed article that frames ADHD through the Māori pīwakawaka metaphor, offering an Indigenous, strengths-based lens. One of Byron’s current areas of interest is Artificial Intelligence, particularly its impacts on Māori and other Indigenous peoples, and its potential to support those living with executive dysfunction.
